CPI(M) to woo podu, tenant farmers in Wyra

Issues concerning ‘podu’ cultivators and tenant farmers are likely to dominate the electioneering in the ST reserved Wyra Assembly constituency during the campaigning for the coming Assembly polls. The podu and tenant farmers together constitute a sizeable chunk of electorate in the constituency. According to sources, there are around 15,000 families of podu farmers mainly spread in Julurupadu, Enkoor and Karepalli mandals in the constituency. Mass contactThe cadres of the CPI (M) have already launched a mass contact programme to express solidarity with the aggrieved farmers and a social media campaign to highlight the woes of podu and tenant farmers in the constituency. CPI (M) affiliated Girijana Sangham rallied behind the cause of aggrieved podu and tenant farmers by organising mass movements seeking strict implementation of the Recognition of Forest Rights (RoFR) Act to uphold the rights of podu cultivators and sanction of investment support to the tenant farmers under the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Several tribal hamlets in the constituency witnessed a slew of protests by farmers demanding grant of pattas for their ‘podu’ lands in the last few years. Tenant farmers also staged a series of agitations across the constituency protesting their exclusion from the purview of the Rythu Bandhu scheme ever since the scheme was launched in May this year. CPI (M) affiliated Girijana Sangham rallied behind the cause of aggrieved podu and tenant farmers by organising mass movements seeking strict implementation of the Recognition of Forest Rights (RoFR) Act to uphold the rights of podu cultivators and sanction of investment support to the tenant farmers under the Rythu Bandhu scheme. The CPI(M) which holds a significant sway among the farmers in the constituency is contemplating to field its party candidate with the support of the Bahujan Left Front (BLF) to wrest the seat from the ruling TRS. The supporters of the CPI (M) have drawn up plans to step up the campaign through social media platforms mainly the WhatsApp after the announcement of the party candidate next week.
