Huge crowds, colourful procession mark Ganesha immersion in city

The centralised procession started at Balapur, while thousands of idols from other parts of the city joining it at N.T.R. Festive fervour pervaded the city and the 10-day festivities passed off peacefully with Lord Ganesha reaching the water bodies in various parts of the city and also the epicentre of the immersion – Tank Bund. It was greeted by thousands of devotees who lined up the route to witness the tallest Ganesha in the city. Spraying colours and screaming Ganapati Bappa Moriya with high-decibel music from mikes fitted to huge trucks carrying the idols, people occupied the city streets throughout the day as Ganesha procession for immersion of idols moved towards Hussainsagar from Sunday morning. The procession from Balapur took off after the auction of the laddu, the most awaited event of the immersion day.

For the first time in the history of the twin cities, the immersion procession of the Khairatabad Ganesha idol concluded by afternoon, thus ensuring that the processions from other parts picked up pace making the entire affair smooth. The iconic idol standing 57-foot tall started its journey early with police making special arrangements for the same. It passed through Telephone Bhavanm, Secretariat and, finally, reached the destination at N.T.R. marg, covering the 4-km route on expected time. It was greeted by thousands of devotees who lined up the route to witness the tallest Ganesha in the city. The centralised procession started at Balapur, while thousands of idols from other parts of the city joining it at N.T.R. Marg, Necklace Road and the Tank Bund road. The procession from Balapur took off after the auction of the laddu, the most awaited event of the immersion day. Across the city, social organisations set up water points distributing water sachets to devotees and to those who had come to witness the yatra. Some also distributed food packets en route. An estimated 14,000 idols were installed across the city in pandals on main roads and in the colonies and the number is expected to be more if idols in the small lanes are counted too. The GHMC and other wings of the government has deployed around 200 cranes, including the static ones, at all water bodies.
