Epicentre Jangaon: Caste math keeps kutami on the edge here HYDERABAD: The Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) on Wednesday tested the glue in the Congress grand alliance ahead of the assembly elections by announcing that it will contest on 12 seats. This included the contentious Jangaon seat and four other segments already announced by Congress and Telangana-TDP in their first lists. TJS, however, did not name candidates on the seats, leaving a window of conciliation open.Congress had offered TJS eight seats, but its vice-president P L Vishweshwar Rao insisted that they had been given 12 seats and that they were seeking another two. The initial agreement was Congress would fight on 94 seats, TTDP on 14 and CPI would field candidates on 3 seats, besides the eight seats given to TJS.TJS made the announcement hours after backward class leader and Telangana Congress ex-president Ponnala Lakshmaiah said in Delhi that he would contest from Jangaon and that there was no doubt Congress would give him the seat.TJS also named the Miryalguda seat, sought by Congress legislative party leader K Jana Reddy for his son Raghuveer.Interestingly, the Congress second list of 10 constituencies, released on Wednesday morning, did not have Ponnala and Jangaon.Sources said that Congress had agreed to give Jangaon to Kodandaram for his electoral debut, but this upset backward class leaders. The community comprises 56% of Telangana’s population.Of the 12 seats that TJS announced, Congress has already staked claim on Asifabad and Station Ghanpur, while TTDP has said it will contest from Mahbubnagar.“We are in talks with the Congress and other alliance partners seeking two more seats,” Vishweshwar Rao said. “Congress and TDP leaders have to persuade their candidates to withdraw their claims. We are going to contest from 12 segments and we have discussed this with the Congress. We will contest the seats under the umbrella of grand alliance.”Another alliance partner, CPI, which had threatened to walk out of the alliance if it was not given five seats, on Wednesday announced candidates for three constituencies on which there was consensus. Its leaders said their negotiations for one or two more seats would continue.
