HYDERABAD: Rs 6.5 crore worth smuggled cigarettes seized by the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) sleuths in December 2017, were destroyed at the inland container depot (ICD) at Thimmapur on Tuesday.In the first week of December 2017, The DRI sleuths opened a container at the ICD in Thimmapur near Kothur. The documentation of the container mentioned that the cargo was self adhesive tapes imported from United Arab Emirates (UAE). But when DRI sleuths opened the container, they found, 45.3 lakh sticks of foreign cigarettes including 15 lakh sticks of Benson & Hedges brand made in UK and 30.3 lakh sticks of Mond Brand made in UAE.Subsequently, DRI arrested two accused and on Tuesday, the seized cigarettes were destroyed by compressing them at ICD in Thimmapur.
