Khajaguda lake set to be our own Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is now a drinking water lake, thanks to remediation efforts. ATA president-elect Bhuvanesh Boojala told TOI, “We will support the remediation efforts of Khajaguda Lake. “We will provide technical know-how and make it fit for even swimming,” electrical engineer, MWRD, Syam Pappu told TOI. ATA is keen to turn over a new leaf and make the Khajaguda Lake a top tourist destination in Hyderabad.”The bigger question is: Will management of waste rid the lake of contamination? Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, which has extended its helping hand to revive the lake, has an answer.

HYDERABAD: Plastic waste turning up in alarming numbers in Lake Michigan in the US raised grave concerns, posing risk to people and wildlife as it spread toxic chemicals and diseasecausing bacteria. That was some years ago. Lake Michigan is now a drinking water lake, thanks to remediation efforts. The dirty and messy Pedda Cheruvu in Khajaguda, better known as Khajaguda Lake, in the IT corridor of Hyderabad is all set to follow in the footsteps of Lake Michigan and emerge as a clean water body.While the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is spending Rs 80 lakh on strengthening of lake bund and constructing a sewerage treatment plant, what has gladdened the lake lovers is the help pouring in from American Telugu Association (ATA). ATA president-elect Bhuvanesh Boojala told TOI, “We will support the remediation efforts of Khajaguda Lake. We will not only focus on improving the water quality, but also increase the lake’s water retention capacity. ATA is keen to turn over a new leaf and make the Khajaguda Lake a top tourist destination in Hyderabad.”The bigger question is: Will management of waste rid the lake of contamination? Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, which has extended its helping hand to revive the lake, has an answer. “We will provide technical know-how and make it fit for even swimming,” electrical engineer, MWRD, Syam Pappu told TOI. He added that revival of the lake would take a couple of years. “If you keep the lake healthy to begin with, it’s a lot more manageable,” he added.Additional commissioner (corporate social responsibility), GHMC, Harichandana Dasari said that both ATA and MWRD had come forward to rejuvenate the decades old lake. “MWRD will provide technical support, while ATA has assured us of financial help,” the official said.
