HYDERABAD: Misdiagnosis has cost Care Hospital and its doctors dearly with a consumer forum directing them to cough up Rs 60,000 as compensation to the aggrieved patient. According to the complainant, doctors wrongfully told his wife that her yet-to-born child had a hole in the heart, while she was consulting them during her pregnancy D Bhikshapathi, the complainant, submitted that in the fifth month of his wife Bhargavi’s pregnancy a gynaecologist at Care Hospital advised her to get foetal echo-cardiographic test done. This was performed under the supervision of a peadiatric cardiologist at the hospital. After seeing the reports, the doctor allegedly informed them that the foetus had a hole in the heart and the size of valves were unequal. This, they added, could lead to mental disorders and growth issues. He further claimed that doctors hinted at the possibility of the child needing operation after birth. However, the expecting parents decided to opt for a second opinion. To their surprise, when they approached a specialist at a well-known children’s hospital in the city, the tests revealed that there was no problem with the baby in the womb. When the complainant raised the issue with Care Hospital, they allegedly informed that it was a technical issue with the scanning machine. Stating that the misdiagnosis led to tremendous physical and mental strain, he filed this complaint seeking compensation. The hospital and its doctors, in their written version, denied allegations and submitted that the reports pointed to a justifiable suspicion of a hole in the baby’s heart. Claiming that there was a possibility of error in the test result, they said, that they also advised the couple to go in for the test again, after two weeks.During the trial, the bench observed that the second opinion was sorted by the complainant, but was not advised by the doctors at Care Hospital as they claimed. “One can imagine the mental stress and agony of a pregnant woman when she was informed that baby in the womb has a heart problem. The very fact that the doctors at Care Hospital explained to the complainant and his wife about likely complications without a confirmed test speaks the volumes of negligence on part of the opposite parties,” said the forum.
