HYDERABAD: In a case of animal cruelty, six dogs and nine pigs were allegedly poisoned in Koremulla village of Ghatkesar in Medchal district. The incident came to light on Thursday, after a local resident, Bijili Bikshapathi, spotted the carcasses of the dead animals and alerted volunteers of Compassionate Society for Animals (CSA), an animal welfare organisation."There were about nine pigs and six dogs poisoned by two people in the village. Some of the pigs that were killed had piglets, which are abandoned now. I caught the culprits after they had dumped about eight pigs in a nearby water body. We somehow stopped them from dumping the remaining carcasses," said Bikshapathi. "They even tied the legs of dogs after killing them so that it becomes easy for them to carry the carcasses and dump them in the water," Bikshapathi said.Volunteers of CSA found only carcass of a pig and six dogs when they visited the site on Thursday."Killing of dogs and other animals has become a regular practice in the village. The last incident of poisoning was about 10 days ago. A few residents who care for these dogs are also threatened by the people who poison the dogs," said N Pravalika, founder and chairperson of CSA."There is a rabid dog in the village, and we are afraid the villagers will kill many other dogs along with it. They do not know that killing only makes the solution worse. Municipal authorities should take by anti-rabies and anti-birth control programmes, instead," said Pravalika.CSA filed a complaint at Ghatkesar police station and officials have sent the carcasses for post-mortem.
