The state recorded fifth highest number of cases of cruelty with 35% rise in cases of domestic violence by husband or his relatives. The surge is high in comparison to 2019 data.

Crime against women have increased in Telangana as the state reported 8500 cases of domestic violence in 2019 as per the latest National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) Crime in India 2019 report. The state recorded fifth highest number of cases of cruelty with 35% rise in cases of domestic violence by husband or his relatives. The surge is high in comparison to 2019 data.

The NCRB reported as many as 163 dowry death in the state out of which only one case was reported under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. With surge in cases of domestic abuse experts believe that the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act provides only a little help to women.

According to She Team over 3000 domestic violence related cases have been registered in the past two years.

She Team stated that ‘’the couples are initially asked to undergo counseling sessions. If the result is not fruitful they either opt to go their separate ways or lodge a harassment case. If the harassment is severe an FIR is registered directly’’.

Meanwhile Dr. Mamatha Raghuverr from the NGO Tharuni also stated that ‘’the domestic violence act is toothless and can only avail maintenance to the victim, ranging from as low as INR 1500 to INR 10,000. The act’s definition of domestic violence includes not just physical but verbal, emotional, sexual and economic violence. However, it does not provide any penal provision against the offender’’.

Swati Lakra additional DGP of women safety wing stated ‘’we urge victims to reach out to cops and dial 100 some districts have a separate patrolling vehicle to reach out to help such victims. In some cases we had rescued women from their house when they dialed 100 after facing severe harassment during the lockdown’’.
