Robotics startup Vistan NextGen is planning to set up production sites either in the state or Andhra Pradesh by March 2021. Robots will be programmed in such a way that they can check COVID symptoms.

Rama Raju Singam, founder of the start-up told the Times of India, “We are on a mission to create a working atmosphere wherein robots and humans can co-work and co-exist under the same roof. We plan to introduce a series of designed and indigenously manufactured robots over the next one year.”

The start-up is producing its robots through third party manufacturers located in Kukatpally, Bengaluru and Coimbatore, according to Singam. They are seeking to roll out the concept of Robot as a Service for the first time in the country. While NextGen’s Sushruth robot would ensure contactless help to patients coming into hospitals and clinics, the AI-enabled interactive bot Nightingale could track symptoms of Covid, among other work, Singam said.

In India, besides an expansion in screening strategy, including all ‘symptomatic individuals in every part of India’, facilities and types of kits have been increased. Other types of tests like an antibody, TrueNat, and CBNAAT and antigen were started as ICMR faced flak for less screening.

It must be noted that unlike RT-PCR tests, antibody tests are for surveillance purposes and can check if a patient had Covid. ICMR has advised antibody testing as ‘supplementary’ to RT-PCR screening. The maximum tests being held in the country and globally are RT-PCR.

The test finds Covid’s RNA and tells whether or not someone has Covid very early on.
