A critical fungal infection called Mucormycosis that could affect the respiratory and digestive system and the brain has been increasing in a number of cases.

According to experts, from five to seven cases in a year, the number of cases has increased to more than 60 over the last seven to eight months. Of these, 10 were witnessed at Telangana government-run Gandhi Hospital alone as many patients who had been treated are returning with post-COVID issues including this infection.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection that is seen in immune-compromised patients, patients who had a transplant or are on cancer-related medicines.

Dr M. Raja Ram, superintendent of the hospital told the Times of India, “We see this infection in patients who have recovered from viral diseases and since Covid is a viral disease, it is being seen in the Covid recovered patients too. Over the last seven to eight months we have seen about 10 patients at our hospital.”

In Rhino-orbital infection, swelling in the eyes, unilateral nasal discharge, headache, numbness of the face is experienced. It occurs in patients with diabetes, but the use of corticosteroid treatment in Covid creates a perfect setting for Mucormycosis.
