Caste to play a major role in Telangana Bypoll

  • | Wednesday | 31st March, 2021

Of more than 21 castes having at least 1,000 voters in the assembly constituency, these three groups (Reddy, Yadav and Lambada) have been major influencers in the previous elections.

With three major parties announcing their candidates for the Nagarjunasagar bypoll, caste is likely to play a crucial role in the outcome at the hustings on April 17.

Congress, TRS and BJP candidates belong to three large caste groups (Reddy, Yadav and Lambada respectively), having the highest number of votes. Of more than 21 castes having at least 1,000 voters in the assembly constituency, these three groups have been major influencers in the previous elections.

Apart from these three communities, Madiga and Mala communities have strong presence in the constituency, tempting Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga to announce that his socialist Mahajan Party would put up a candidate too.

BJP is of the view that by giving the ticket to a member of the Lambada community, they would bag the anti-establishment vote. Of the 12 times elections were held in the constituency, including in United Andhra Pradesh, so far, Reddys have won it seven times.

Goud community`s Nimmala Ramulu had won the seat in the 1960s and 70s, while Yadav leader Rammurty Yadav won the seat in 1994 (TDP). After a long time, Nomula Narasimhaiah, who belongs to the Yadav community, wrested the seat again in the 2018 assembly election for TRS .
