High in spirits: Liquor sales hit new high in poll-bound Sagar

  • | Thursday | 1st April, 2021

Last year during the same period in March more than 4,735 beer bottles were sold.

With the campaigning for the Nagarjuna Sagar byelection reaching a feverish pitch, political parties are busy attracting influential persons and community leaders by hosting parties with delicious food and liquor.

The target of the political leaders is to cover as many voters as possible and woo them as the election date is approaching.
In Nagarjuna Sagar there are around 2.5 lakh voters in 89 villages and two municipalities.

While touring all these areas, the leaders are ensuring that people are being invited to these food and liquor parties.

A look at the liquor sales in this area over the last few days gives credence to the criticism that political parties are trying to influence the voters by organising booze parties in a big way.

In the first 27 days in March, the liquor sales in this assembly segment stood at Rs 17 crore. Last year, by the time the shops were shut down due to Covid-19 on March 21, the liquor sales were only Rs 8 crore. Almost at the same time this year the sales have doubled up.

Another observation is that the sales of spirits is more in six particular shops though there are 18 in this assembly segment. A huge demand was witnessed in wholesale shops.

Interestingly, many purchased premium brands in this period.

Usually, in summer beer sales go up but now there is spike in premium brand liquor sales in this region. Many attribute this to the elections.
