In a first, 8 Lions test positive for Covid-19 in Hyderabad Zoo

The Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) told the officials of Nehru Zoological Park that 8 lions have been found positive for Covid-19 after an RT-PCR test on 29 April.

The covid-19 situation in India is deteriorating with every passing day, now the news of Covid-19 among lions has come to light after 8 lions showed symptoms of Covid-19 at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. The Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) told the officials of Nehru Zoological Park that 8 lions have been found positive for Covid-19 after an RT-PCR test on 29 April. However, it has not been officially confirmed yet.

Dr. Siddhanand Kukreti, director of the Zoological Park, has himself said that there are signs of Covid-19 in the lions. Doctor Kukreti said, `it is true that the lions are showing symptoms of coronavirus but we are yet to get an RT-PCR report of these lions from CCMB. Information about this will be given only after getting the report.`

Dr. Shirish Upadhyay, director of the Wildlife Research and Training Center (WRTC), said that no such reports came out after eight tigers and lions of the Bronx Zoo in the USA were tested for Covid-19. However, the virus was found in dogs and cats in Hong Kong, he said.

NZP officials decided to test these lions after Covid-19 symptoms were visible in them, Veterinarians detected symptoms like loss of appetite, runny nose and coughing among the lions. A total of 12 lions have been tested.
