Govt looking to secure Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccines produced in Hyderabad

The Johnson and Johnson`s Covid-19 vaccine produced by Biological E in India will not be directly launched in the domestic market and the entire vaccine will be handed over to the US pharmaceutical company as per the agreement with the company.

The Johnson and Johnson`s Covid-19 vaccine produced by Biological E in India will not be directly launched in the domestic market and the entire vaccine will be handed over to the US pharmaceutical company as per the agreement with the company, but the government is considering the possibility of acquiring some part of its production, according to the sources.

Hyderabad`s Biological E has proposed to make around 30 crore doses of its indigenous vaccine for the Indian market by December and has demanded `financial support from the government. It is currently in phase 1/2 of clinical trials.

Sources said that the Ministry of External Affairs as well as the Department of Biotechnology have been asked to work on acquiring a part of the J&J vaccine being manufactured by BE for the Indian market. The government is exploring all routes of vaccine supply and the Cabinet Secretary held two rounds of high-level meetings last week on the availability of vaccines in the global and domestic markets.
