Biological E`s Covid-19 vaccine is currently in Phase III clinical trials after showing good results in Phase I and Phase II trials.

The Union Health Ministry has finalized an agreement with Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer Biological-E to manufacture and store 300 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The ministry would make an advance payment of Rs 1,500 crore.

The ministry said in a statement on Thursday that the production and storage of these vaccine doses will be done between August and December this year.

Biological E`s Covid-19 vaccine is currently in Phase III clinical trials after showing good results in Phase I and Phase II trials.

The vaccine being developed by Biologicals E is an `RBD protein subunit` vaccine and could be available in the next few months.

The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration (NEGVAC) for Covid-19, after considering the proposal of Biological E, recommended its approval, the statement said.

It said the tie-up with Biological-e is part of the Centre`s wider effort to encourage indigenous vaccine makers, through which it is providing R&D support as well as financial assistance to vaccine makers.

The Center has assisted in the study of the potential Covid vaccine of Biological-E from the preclinical phase to the third phase.

Apart from this, the company has signed agreements with two foreign companies to manufacture their vaccines in India. Biological E announced Tuesday that it has entered into an agreement with Providence Therapeutics Holdings, a Canada-based company, to manufacture its mRNA Covid-19 vaccine in India. It is also supposed to run a clinical trial of the vaccine in India. Apart from this, the company also has a deal with Johnson & Johnson to manufacture its Covid-19 vaccine in India.
