Telangana HC orders judicial enquiry into 45-year-old Dalit woman's custodial death

The Telangana High Court has ordered a judicial inquiry into the custodial death of a Dalit woman at Anna Gudur Police station under Bhongir district.

The Telangana High Court has ordered a judicial inquiry into the custodial death of a Dalit woman at Anna Gudur Police station under Bhongir district. The woman died on 18 June. The court has directed the Alair Magistrate to conduct the investigation and submit the report in a sealed cover. The magistrate has also been directed to remove the dead body if necessary and conduct its post-mortem again.

A bench of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice T. Vinod Kumar gave the order while hearing a PIL filed by People’s Union for Civil Liberties( PUCL), Telangana. The petition has demanded an inquiry into the death of a Dalit woman at Adda Gudur police station under the Rachakonda Police Commissioner`s office.

A 45-year-old woman Mariamma died under suspicious circumstances at Bhongir area hospital. The family members of the 45-year-old woman had alleged that she was tortured in police custody which led to her death. The Yadadri police officer said that "the woman Mariamma was brought to the Addagudur police station along with her son at around 8 am in connection with a theft case of Rs 2 Lakh from church premises".

The woman later fainted at the police station and was immediately taken to a local hospital. After some time Mariamma was referred to the Higher Center, where doctors declared her brought dead. The victim`s family alleges that the police brought Mariamma a day earlier and tortured her to death.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has also sent notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana to inform about the action initiated in the matter. The commission has also asked the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Bhongir district of Telangana to submit their action taken report within a week.
