Bharat Jodo Yatra: Rahul unfurls national flag in front of Charminar

Hyderabad, Nov 1 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi unfurled the national flag in front of the iconic Charminar here on Tuesday, over 32 years after his father and then party chief Rajiv Gandhi had started the "Sadbhavna Yatra" from the same spot.Gandhi unfurled the tricolour amidst a massive crowd at the congested Charminar locality.Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, senior leader Digvijaya Singh and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Revanth Reddy were among those present at the event.Gandhi arrived at Charminar to loud cheers and "Bharat Jodo" slogans with a sea of national as well as party flags dotting the road leading up to the Charminar.The Gandhi scion also paid floral tributes to his father Rajiv Gandhi"s photograph on the stage.Ramesh said the spot at the historic Charminar where Rahul Gandhi unfurled the tricolour was from where Rajiv Gandhi had started the "Sadbhavna Yatra" on October 19, 1990.Every year on that day, the Congress has raised the national flag here, he said, adding that this time they could not do it on October 19 so they did it on Tuesday.In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said, "Thirty-two years ago, papa started his Sadbhavna Yatra from Charminar. He had sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of India." "Harmony is the most unique value of humanity. I, and the Congress party, will not allow it to be destroyed in the face of any divisive force," the former Congress president said.The padyatra resumed from the Matha temple in Shamshabad this morning and halted at the Legacy Palace at Bahadurpura in Hyderabad for an afternoon break.During the afternoon break, Gandhi interacted with women"s groups and discussed economic support, healthcare access, plan for marginalised women and rights of the LGBT community.Representing the transgender community, Meera Jasmine talked about the lack of healthcare, educational and livelihood opportunities.Pavani, a domestic worker, spoke about issues of social status and dignity of domestic workers, as well as work conditions post-Covid.An acid attack survivor sought healthcare support and implementation of the ban on the sale of acid.The yatra"s night halt will be at Gandhi Ideology Centre in Bowenpally.
