Video Shows Teens Cleaning Drain In Hyderabad, Case Against Orphanage

In a disturbing video, a group of teenage girls from an orphanage in Hyderabad are seen clearing manhole around their hostel.A case has been registered against the officials who run the orphanage with around 200 children as inmates in Hyderabad's Uppal area for making teenage girls clean a drain on Saturday. Child labour and manual scavenging are banned in India.The video shot by a passerby, who alerted the police, shows one of the girls inside the drain cleaning it while the other girls are assisting her.Police have registered a case under section 75 of justice juvenile act that pertains to physical torture and abuse. Those running the hostel are being interrogated by the police.Last month, a similar case of child labour had come to light, when a teacher of a government school in the states Ranga Reddy district forced students to work. For nearly a month, students at Shivarampally ZP High School toiled to demolish an old compound wall.The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) in Telangana had rescued 3,000 child labourers in 2016 under Operation Muskaan and Operation Smile.
