more-in The proposal for setting up one more mechanised modern abattoir in the district has saet the alarm bells ringing. A proposal was made to the state government few months ago reportedly by Al-Qawi Exports Limited to set up a modern mechanised abattoir at Malgi village in Nayalakal mandal, near Karnataka border. The catchment area for the proposed abattoir would cover both Karntaka and Telangana, environmental activist A. Kishan Rao said and added that the proposal was pending with the Pollution Control Board (PCB). At present the district has two mechanised modern slaughter houses — Al- Kabeer Exports Private Limted at Rudraram and Frigerio Conserva Allana Limited near Zaheerabad. Both these slaughter houses process cattle meat for export and the animals are being procured from the district as well as from neighbouring Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to sources between April and July this year 2.39 lakh cattle were consumed by both the abattoirs, which comes to 2,420 animals per day. “Complete information is not available, but any proposal for another abattoir in the district must be rejected as we are already having two slaughter houses. The cattle population in the district has already fallen to alarming levels and any additional abattoir would prove a disaster,” Mr. Kishan Rao told The Hindu. An official in the district administration confirmed that they had received an application from Al-Qawi Exports Limited. “The PCB has to issue two permission — Consent for Establishment (CFE) before commencement of construction and Consent for Operations (CFO) — for any industry to operate. As the CFE itself was rejected there is no chance of another abattoir coming in the district,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
