NIA to probe Imphal serial blasts: Biren

IMPHAL: N Biren Singh on Wednesday condemned the serial blasts in Imphal city and told the Manipur assembly that the incidents will be probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) soon. Another set of twin blasts took place inside the historic Imphal polo ground on Monday, which was followed by yet another instance of twin blasts on Tuesday evening, leaving nine jawans injured. Seconds after the blast, a hand grenade exploded inside the nearby Army camp that houses the defence's public relations office. The CM added that the earlier decision taken by his government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the blasts has been abandoned and the NIA will be investigating them instead.The proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF), in a statement issued to the media on Wednesday, claimed responsibility for all the serial blasts in Imphal and also the attack on an Assam Rifles patrol team at Konthoujam Lamkai in Imphal West on December 4 last year. The outfit, which claims to be fighting to restore Manipur's past independence, said the attacks were launched by a special team of its armed wing - the Manipur People's Army.On January 15, the first twin blasts occurred at the high security Kanglapat road where an IED exploded near a school, injuring a woman sweeper of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).
