Two Rohingya held for human trafficking

IMPHAL: Two Rohingya Muslims were arrested and a girl rescued by the police during a search operation at the border town of Moreh on Saturday night.The girl was reportedly being trafficked from Myanmar by the duo, a police source said on Sunday.Based on specific information about the presence of traffickers at Moreh Ward number 5, the police carried out a house-to-house search there and arrested the duo - Saifullah (34) of Baguna and Md Salam (25) of Gomtidam Baguna , a source said. A mobile phone was seized from them and they were handed over to Moreh police station for further investigation, the source added.On the other hand, an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) Jamadar, Elangbam Ibotombi, was found dead with a bullet wound on his head at a hotel in Imphal in the wee hours of Sunday.Though the exact cause of his death could not be ascertained immediately, police suspected that he might have committed suicide as his service weapon was found near his body.Ibotombi, a resident of Langmeidong in Kakching district, belonged to the third battalion the force and was assigned the security escort of the Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma during his two-day visit to Imphal.The body has been taken to RIMS hospital for autopsy.
