Lakhs marooned as monsoon hits North East

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said 1,127.72 hectare of croplands in six districts went under water. The State Disaster Response Force has evacuated 124 people from Karimganj, one of the worst-affected districts, where nearly 80,000 people were hit. More than 10,000 people including 3,941 children from flood-hit districts have taken shelter in 71 relief camps. In Manipur, the state government declared a holiday on Wednesday for all officials and academic institutions after floods devastated the twin capital districts of Imphal West and Imphal East over the last three days.A red alert has been issued after the Met department warned of heavy monsoon showers in Tripura and southern Assam over the next 48 hours.Six districts of Assam - Golaghat, Karbi Anglong East, Karbi Anglong West, Biswanath, Karimganj and Hailakandi - have been flooded since monsoon hit the state early this month. More than 10,000 people including 3,941 children from flood-hit districts have taken shelter in 71 relief camps.
