GUWAHATI/SILCHAR/IMPHAL: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority ( ASDMA ) recorded six more deaths on Tuesday-two in Cachar and four in Karimganj district of Barak Valley However, with flood waters receding in Golaghat district on Tuesday, the total number of districts affected by floods came down to five from six. Nagaon, Hojai, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj continued to remain under water on Tuesday. More than 5. 64 lakh people are in the grip of floods with over 1.57 lakh taking shelter in relief camps.Principal secretary, revenue and disaster management, and chief executive officer of Assam state disaster management authority, Rajesh Prasad, visited three districts of the Barak Valley and assessed the damages and checked relief and rescue operations.Prasad held separate high level meetings with DCs and senior officials of the civil and police administration. He asked the officials of the departments concerned, particularly health and public health engineering, to pitch in to provide relief and succour to the flood hit. He assured health officials that he would look into the shortage of doctors across the district. Prasad said doctors from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital would be despatched if required.Prasad said the state government is taking steps to repair the embankments across Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. "The state government has requested the Centre for a facelift of the embankments. We are demanding the design of a road-cum-embankment that would get detached during floods and help in rural connectivity," he said.Prasad, who is also the CEO of ASDMA, visited the affected areas and the camps. He said steps would be taken to provide proper healthcare for the victims in the camps and paediatricians from the Silchar Medical College and Hospital would be engaged. He added that many roads were damaged and that they would approach appropriate authorities for the repair of these stretches.Sources in the district disaster management authority said that as many as eight people died in the floods and an ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh would be paid to the kin. He said financial assistance would be provided to people who had lost their homes and livestock.The flood situation in the districts improved in the past 48 hours with all rivers flowing below the danger level. The Assam Rifles, Army and CRPF were, however, on standby for exigencies. On receipt of track fit certificates for the running of trains over the flood affected Panchgram-Katakhal section near Silchar, train services resumed in the Badapur-Silchar section on Tuesday. The 15943 UP Silchar-Dibrugarh Express left Silchar on Tuesday as scheduled while the Sealdah-Silchar Kanchenjungha Express also arrived at Silchar on schedule. The 15612 Dn Silchar-Guwahati Express will also start from Silchar on Wednesday as scheduled, said an NFR spokesman.In Manipur, various government and civil organisations continued to extend monetary assistance to people affected by the recent floods in the state through the Chief Minister's Relief fund.On Tuesday, two different groups donated a total of Rs 1,62,250. Of the amount, Rs 1,42,250 was donated by College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University , Iroisemba. The Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre, Manipur, gave Rs 20,000 . Biren Singh, who received the amount, thanked the donors for generously contributing to help flood-affected people.Though the flood situation in some parts of the state is improving, some areas are still inundated.Altogether 1,80,102 people across 10 districts have been hit by the floods, said a statement issued by the Manipur information and public relations department. The floods claimed seven lives and one person is still missing, it said.
