Manipur: Retd IPS officer among 4 abducted from Imphal

IMPHAL: Police have launched a massive operation in Imphal valley to rescue four elderly persons, including a retired IPS officer A Kunjo Singh , who were abducted by unknown armed men for ransom from Sekmai area in Imphal West.Deputy Inspector General of police (Range 1) K Jayanta Singh , who looks after Imphal West and Imphal East districts, told this reporter on Friday that soon after receiving the abduction report, widespread rescue operations have been launched by commandos headed by senior officers at suspected areas in both districts.“We have gathered reports that the abduction is linked with monetary demand slapped by the perpetrators,” the senior police officer said.It is quite early to spell out to which group the abductors belong, but they, upon their nature of their abduction, seemed to be a gang of extortionists, he added.The four - retired India Reserve Battalion (IRB) commandant Kunjo and the other three – all from Sekmai area, were carrying out their daily evening walk along the Sekmai-Khurukhul Road when the kidnappers, who came in a car, whipped out small arms and abducted them around 6pm, locals said.“Besides carrying out massive rescue operations, security has been beefed up all strategic locations and all police stations have been alerted to coordinate with the search exercise,” the DIG said.
