IMPHAL: At least nine people, mostly children, were killed in the wee hours of Wednesday when heavy landslides triggered at three different places at the remote Tamenglong district of Manipur , which has been hit by incessant rains since the past one week.Of the all victims, Zeilangnrong Nagas, seven bodies have been recovered from the thick earth masses, while an intense search for the two victims is on, police said.The victims were fast asleep after watching late night World Cup semi-final match when their houses were brought down and buried by the heavy landslides at New Salem, Ramgailong and Neigailong in Tamenglong town, vice chairperson of Manipur State Disaster Management Authority Adim Pamei told TOI.“We are shocked to hear the tragic incidents and we condole the demise of the nine people mostly the young children. We also share our grief and pangs inflicted by the bereaved families,” Pamei said as he along with principal secretary Manipur relief and disaster management principal secretary M H Khan rushed to the spots.Relief and rehabilitation minister Karam Shyam and education minister Th Radheshyam Singh also rushed to Tamenglong to assess the situation.“We are planning to give ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased. The government will give Rs one lakh each as immediate relief measure to them today,” he said.Rehabilitation measures for the victims would be taken up after collecting the assessment reports to be submitted by the district authority, Pamei said.Of the nine, five sibling including three girls and two boys died at New Salem at Tamenglong Ward No 5 and a mother and son were killed at Neigailong (Ward No 2) while two others lost their lives at Ramgailong, locals said and added that they along with the police are carrying out intense task to recover the missing two.
