Manipur University crisis: CM N Biren Singh to meet HRD minister Prakash Javadekar today

IMPHAL: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has stated that he will rush to New Delhi on Friday to resolve the escalating crisis gripping the Centre-run Manipur University. The CM further said he had told MUTA representatives that he was willing to request the Union HRD minister to relieve the present VC of his duties till the completion of an inquiry regarding the allegations levelled against him. "As MU is run by the Centre, the state government can't intervene into its affairs. Taking serious note of the issue, his government has been making all possible efforts, including meeting with the representatives of MUTA and MUSU and explaining the stand of the varsity's community to the HRD minister, Biren said.Biren said the state cabinet had discussed the matter on many occasions. However, the state government has been trying to explore all possible means to resolve the issue taking serious note of the academic career of the students of the state," he said.On his request, the HRD minister has deputed a joint secretary to take stock of the situation, added Biren.

A team led by him will meet Union human resources development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar to apprise him about the issue, Biren said at a media conference held at his office secretariat on Thursday.Alleging financial and administrative irregularities against the varsity's vice-chancellor Adya Prashad Pandey, the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has shut down the varsity since June 6.In a new twist to the issue, Biren said the VC had complained to the Centre that an underground group demanded Rs 5 crore from him and that the agitation in the varsity is the instigation of the group for his failure to cough up the amount.The MU Teachers' Association (MUTA) and the MU Staff Association (MUSA) have lent their support to the MUSU stir, with members of these three bodies having begun a relay hunger strike at the varsity complex since Monday. Taking serious note of the issue, his government has been making all possible efforts, including meeting with the representatives of MUTA and MUSU and explaining the stand of the varsity's community to the HRD minister, Biren said.Biren said the state cabinet had discussed the matter on many occasions.
