Students across Manipur colleges stage sitins demand Manipur University vicechancellor ouster

IMPHAL: Students of various colleges in the valley districts staged sit-ins at their respective institutions on Friday, demanding resignation of Manipur University (MU) vice-chancellor, Adya Prashad Pandey.Students held demonstrations at various colleges including Moirang College, Imphal College, GP Women's College, Bishnupur College, Manipur College, Standard College and SK Women's College. The general strike called by the leading tribal student bodies paralyzed life across the hills districts on Friday. Leaders of the student unions of these institutions expressed their complete support for the demand raised by Manipur University Students' Union (Musu) to remove Pandey.Showing solidarity with the ongoing agitation at MU, traders around the university complex at Canchipur in Imphal West downed shutters on Friday.Academic activities at MU have stopped for over two months now, with the students, teachers and staff of MU bringing several allegations of administrative and financial improprieties against Pandey. Though the Union ministry of human resources development set up a fact-finding committee to probe into the charges levelled against Pandey, the panel is yet to begin work following strong opposition from the MU community.On the other hand, the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) , Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), general headquarters and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) began its 24 hours general strike in the hill districts from Thursday midnight demanding resumption of academic activities at MU.
