NEW DELHI: Landslides in Manipur, which claim many lives during the monsoon every year, are mostly triggered by human intervention, the environment ministry has said. Manipur has witnessed six massive landslides in 2018, three in 2017, one in 2015 and four in 2010, according to the data provided by the Union ministry. "Landslides in the environmentally sensitive hilly areas of Manipur occur frequently during monsoon. Deforestation, blasting, tunnelling and encroachments on drainage systems, rivers and streams leave a place vulnerable to landslides," he said. "We need to clearly classify such highly landslide-prone regions and also update the reviews every decade.
