IMPHAL: A journalist in Manipur, who was arrested for posting a video on Facebook criticizing chief minister N Biren Singh, BJP and RSS on November 21 and later released on bail by a local court, was rearrested and detained under the National Security Act on Tuesday.Police, in an FIR, had earlier charged Kishorechandra Wangkhem (39) with sedition, causing annoyance to others with obscene acts and defaming individuals.A detention order issued by Imphal West district magistrate Naorem Preveen Singh did not specify the reasons for Kishorechandra’s detention. It simply stated that Kishorechandra, “who is now on bail would resume activities, which are prejudicial to the security of the state and to the maintenance of public order as he is a habitual offender invoking offences that intends to cause fear or alarm to the public.”Brozendra Ningomba, chief editor of ISTV, a local news channel where Kishorechandra was working, said the latter had left the organization just before he posted the Facebook video. Ningomba, who is also president of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union, said, “We have recently passed a resolution not to support or protect any journalist for whatever consequences he or she has to face for posting any writing or uploading any video on the social media that is not connected to the profession of journalism. He (Kishorechandra) had earlier done similar acts and was arrested for it.”Meanwhile, holding placards that said ‘BJP government can’t tolerate criticism,’ a group of people held a demonstration here in protest against Kishorechandra’s detention. They sought his immediate release.
