Experts in Manipur to catch lsquomystery predatorrsquo

The Churachandpur district administration has constituted a special surveillance team to probe into the matter, but no headway has been made yet.More recently, there have been similar incidents reported from Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kangpokpi districts. Last month, there were reports from Churachandpur district of a similarly mysterious animal killing goats, ducks, pigs and chickens. IMPHAL: Three experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, arrived here on Saturday to ascertain the nature of the mysterious predators which have been spreading terror over the last month by killing small domestic animals at night.On Friday morning, a large number of ducks were found dead at Chingmeirong area of Imphal , with pug marks resembling that of a dog found near the spot. What is even more unusual about these animal killings is that their carcasses are found the next morning with intestines missing, presumably having been eaten up by the predator.On Friday, forest minister Thounoujam Shyamkumar and other senior officials of the state forest and wildlife department conducted a spot inspection near the banks of the Imphal river at the Ningomthong Kitna Panung in Imphal East, where a woman saw two animals on Thursday.
