IMPHAL: A man was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment on Saturday for raping his minor niece five years ago. On January 6, 2014, he reportedly raped his five-year-old niece when her parents had gone to attend a wedding ceremony. The survivor's private parts were also grievously injured in the assault.Case dossiers state that she later narrated the incident to her parents, following which a complaint was lodged by her mother. A special court in Imphal West, which announced the verdict, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict The convict, identified as RK Achouba (40), is a resident of the Moirangkhom area of Imphal West. Achouba was later arrested by the police.In May 2015, the court framed charges against him following the submission of the chargesheet by the investigating officer of the case.

During the trial, the statements of 13 witnesses were recorded.On Thursday, the court had convicted Achouba under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (Pocso) Act and fixed Saturday as the date to announce the quantum of punishment.
