JCILPS threatens stir in Manipur against citizenship bill

Questioning the state government’s silence on the issue, Dilipkumar said the government should act fast and take a decision to oppose the contentious bill.Joining the tirade against the bill, the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) said it poses a severe threat to the indigenous people of the northeast in general and Manipur in particular. AMUCO president Ph Deban said the state and central governments should take a specific stand on the bill at the earliest.United People’s Front (UPF), while appealing to all civil bodies to demand revocation of the bill, said chief minister Biren Singh should support the people’s opposition to the citizenship bill.Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) said it will extend its utmost support to the campaign against the bill and will take concrete steps soon unless the bill is revoked. IMPHAL: Reacting strongly against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in Lok Sabha , the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) has warned of launching an intense agitation if the state government fails to take a decision to oppose the bill by January 12.The joint committee, a conglomerate of several civil bodies of the state, is spearheading the campaign seeking a law to regulate the inflow of illegal migrants into the state.The joint committee’s convenor, Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, stating that the base year for granting of citizenship fixed in the Manipur Peoples’ Protection Bill is 1951, said the Manipur bill would be rendered meaningless if the citizenship bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha .
