Biren, Congress leaders rush to Delhi

The Manipuri students, who along with their national capital counterparts shouted anti-citizenship bill slogans, said they will continue their protest unless their demand to not pass the statute in the Rajya Sabha is fulfilled. He added that his government would take up all possible steps to allay fears of the people.Former Manipur CM and opposition leader Okram Ibobi Singh blamed the state government for its failure to stand firm against the bill. He added that the Centre would be pressurized not to let the bill affect the northeast states and appealed to people not to panic on the issue.The chief minister said they will meet Union home minister Rajnath Singh and other national leaders and urge them not to let the bill affect the region. Stating that the Nagaland cabinet on Tuesday straightaway adopted a resolution against the bill, Ibobi said the ruling MLAs of Manipur have no courage and are only concern about their chairs.On the other hand, about 100 student leaders belonging to six prominent student bodies of the state — AMSU, DESAM, MSF, SUK, KSA and AIMS — on Wednesday staged a protest against the bill at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

IMPHAL: A day after a 13-member delegation of 11 political parties rushed to New Delhi to press the central leaders not to pass Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in the Rajya Sabha Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, leaders of opposition Congress and Manipur People’s Party airdashed to the national capital on Wednesday to oppose the propose legislation.The political delegation, which includes Manipur BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Ksh Bhabhanandav, will insist the Centre to insert a clause in the bill that would exempt Manipur from its purview.Talking to reporters on the sidelines of Martyrs’ Day observance in Imphal before leaving for New Delhi, Biren said a meeting of all chief ministers of the region would be convened to discuss the issue in New Delhi.
