Gold worth Rs 16 lakh seized from Guwahati railway station

While in 2016, GRP had seized some 19.31kg of gold worth Rs 57,95,340, the number went up to almost 75kg of gold worth Rs 224,810,670 in 2017. GUWAHATI: Government railway police (GRP) seized at least six gold bars weighing around 499 grams and arrested one Amzad Ali from the railway station here on Saturday night. "This was the second such incident within a week of gold bars being seized from a railway station in the state. GRP had seized two illegal gold bars worth around Rs 11 lakh and arrested two persons from Kamakhya railway station last Sunday.Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP) HK Das said, "Gold smuggling through railways has seen a sharp rise in recent years. The majority of illegal gold were found to have made their way into clandestine jewellery markets of New Delhi, Ghaziabad, Siliguri , Mumbai, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Ali hails from Hooghly district of West Bengal.GRP sources said, "The seizure would be worth around Rs 16.5 lakh and Ali was taking them from Manipur to West Bengal. The accused has been handed over to the customs department."This was the second such incident within a week of gold bars being seized from a railway station in the state. GRP had seized two illegal gold bars worth around Rs 11 lakh and arrested two persons from Kamakhya railway station last Sunday.Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP) HK Das said, "Gold smuggling through railways has seen a sharp rise in recent years. At least 33 persons were arrested in connection with smuggling illegal gold." The majority of illegal gold were found to have made their way into clandestine jewellery markets of New Delhi, Ghaziabad, Siliguri , Mumbai, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
