IMPHAL: A Rs 97-crore project for the rejuvenation and conservation of the Nambul river in Imphal was launched by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday.The project aims to control river pollution by treating urban waste present in the water by using the latest available technology. The water treatment plan inolves using moving bed bio reactors at Mongsangei and Samushang. Under the project, 56 eco-friendly crematoria and 20 community toilet complexes will also be constructed at various areas along the Nambul river.The Nambul passes through Imphal city and falls into the Loktak lake Water resources department, Public Health Engineering Department Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development and State Pollution Control Board will work together on this project.The project would be executed in a phased manner under the National River Conservation Plan of the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change . The first phase of the project would be undertaken along the polluted stretch of the Nambul river, from Iroisemba to Heirangoithong area in Imphal. Officials said the state government has also submitted proposals for similar projects for seven other rivers - Imphal, Iril, Khuga, Khujairok, Lokchao, Manipur and Thoubal . The total combined cost of these projects are estimated to be around Rs 500 crore.Speaking at the launch programme at his office secretariat, Biren appealed to the people to stop littering the river banks which lead to water and environmental pollution. He added that the water treatment project would also save the Loktak lake, which is the pride of the state.
