Rahul Gandhi arrives in Imphal meets party leaders

IMPHAL: Congress president Rahul Gandhi arrived here on Tuesday to campaign for his party for the coming Lok Sabha election.Rahul, who landed at the Imphal airport at 4.45 pm, was received by CLP leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Manipur PCC president Gaikhangam and other party leaders. Later, he headed to the Hotel Imphal where he will spend the night.At present, the two parliamentary seats in Manipur - Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur - are with Congress. There are seven ticket-seekers for the Outer Manipur seat. Setting aside BJP's claim to win over 300 seats in LS polls, Gaikhangam said the saffron party would not get even 200 seats. Altogether nine people, including current MP T Meinya Singh, are seeking party tickets to contest polls from the in Inner Manipur constituency.

The Congress president then went to the BT Park to pay tribute to the 1891 Anglo- Manipur war heroes, paid a visit to the women's markets and then held a meeting with party leaders to discuss poll strategy at the Congress Bhawan in Imphal. Later, he headed to the Hotel Imphal where he will spend the night.At present, the two parliamentary seats in Manipur - Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur - are with Congress. However, the Grand Old Party is yet to names its nominees for the two constituencies. While Outer Manipur will go to the polls on April 11, Inner Manipur constituency covering the valley districts will vote on April 18.On Wednesday morning, Rahul will interact with students at the Manipur Film Development Society (MFDC) auditorium inside the historic Palace Compound. Around noon, he will address a poll rally in the nearby Hapta Kangjeibung ground. AICC general secretary Luizinho Faleiro, Gaikhangam, Okram Ibobi Singh and senior party legislator TN Haokip will share the dais with Rahul during the rally.The party, which is working hard to retain both the LS seats, is expecting a gathering of around 50,000 party workers and supporters during Wednesday's rally. Altogether nine people, including current MP T Meinya Singh, are seeking party tickets to contest polls from the in Inner Manipur constituency. There are seven ticket-seekers for the Outer Manipur seat. Congress sitting MP from the Outer Manipur seat, Thangso Baite, has not joined the race this time.On the sidelines of inspecting preparations for the rally at Hapta Kangjeibung earlier in the day, Ibobi Singh said people of the state are eagerly waiting to hear from Rahul at the rally. Stating that Rahul's visit to the state is a big opportunity for the people as well as the party, Gaikhangam said the Congress president is now being considered as the savior of the nation. Setting aside BJP's claim to win over 300 seats in LS polls, Gaikhangam said the saffron party would not get even 200 seats.
