Manipur to cast for more bypolls in assembly seats

After the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced byelections to two seats of the state on November 7, chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said the state government would urge the panel to allow holding bypolls in more seats of the state.

After the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced byelections to two seats of the state on November 7, chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said the state government would urge the panel to allow holding bypolls in more seats of the state.


Total no of 60 assembly seats of the state, 13 are vacant owing to expulsions and resignation of legislators of both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress in the recent political crisis and court cases in respect of some seats are pending.


According to the ECI.Bypolls, to fill vacancies would be held in one parliamentary constituency of Bihar and 56 assembly constituencies of various states, including Manipur, Nagaland, UP, Odisha, Telangana, Nagaland, MP, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Haryana, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. For Manipur, Lilong and Wangjing Tentha seats in Thoubal district will go to bypolls on November 7 and counting will be held on November 10.


The state government will write to the ECI to allow holding bypolls to any vacant seat on which no verdicts to put on hold the exercise has been passed by the Supreme Court or high court. Drafting of the appeal is almost completed and the same might be sent to the ECI late on Wednesday evening said Biren.
