The Assam Rifles has announced that it will pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a Manipur villager who was allegedly murdered by a Major of the paramilitary force. Major Alok Sathe of Assam Rifles had allegedly shot dead 29-year-old Mangboilal Lhuvum, a resident of Chalwa village under Kangpokpi police station area of ​​Kangpokpi district.

The Manipur police arrested Sathe following widespread protests against the villager`s killing. A daily wage labourer and father of two children. Brigadier PS Arora, Commander of 22 Sector Assam Rifles has signed an agreement to pay compensation to the kin of the person. The family members of the victim are signatories to the agreement, apart from leaders from the Manipur government and some local civil society organisations.

Assam Rifles will give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased. He has been handed an initial amount of Rs 1 lakh. According to reports, there were other agreements that the present company of 44 Assam Rifles at Banglabang would be removed or replaced at the earliest by the Army Headquarters. It was also agreed that a fully functional armed police station with a strength of at least 40 personnel would be established in the area.

A joint statement issued by Renu Takhellambam, president of Extrajudicial Execution Victim Families Association, and Babloo Loitongbam, executive director of Human Rights Alert, said that a “proper investigation should be held and the guilty ones punished”.
