Former Asian Games gold medalist boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh passed away at the age of 42

Former Asian Games gold medalist boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh passed away at the age of 42; he won the gold medal for India in the Asian Games in the year 1998. Dinko Singh was ill for the past few years and was undergoing treatment for liver cancer. Last year, he had tested positive for Covid-19, adding another one to the health challenges he was already battling. But the 41-year-old fought through and recovered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed deep grief on his death.

Paying tribute to Dingko Singh, PM Modi tweeted and wrote, Shri Dingko Singh was a sporting superstar, an outstanding boxer who earned several laurels and also contributed to furthering the popularity of boxing. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.

Dingko Singh won the gold medal in boxing in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. In recognition of his outstanding performance in boxing, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1998. In 2013, Dingko Singh was honoured with the Padma Shri. Last year, Dingko Singh`s health got worse. After this, he was brought to Delhi for treatment from Manipur. He was undergoing treatment for liver cancer at ILBS, Delhi.

Dingko Singh was not only a sportsman but he was also a source of inspiration. Six-time world champions MC Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi took their boxing inspiration from him. Dingko Singh was serving in the Indian Navy and he worked as a coach. He was staying at home due to ill health for the past several years.
