Manipur governor Najma Heptulla for more direct flights to northeast

On health infrastructure, Heptulla urged to explore the feasibility of 'flying doctors' to attend to emergency situations in the hilly areas . IMPHAL: Pitching for greater connectivity of the country's northeast with the mainland, Manipur governor Najma Heptulla called for more direct flights to the region from different cities of the country, and also highlighted the need for better roads and rail network as per the special requirements of the region.Heptulla was speaking at the conclusion of the two-day 16th North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference (NERCPAC-2017). She pointed out that the criterion of population for allocating funds by the North Eastern Council needed to be revisited as the interests of smaller states tend to be adversely affected by such an approach.On Friday, the conference held deliberations on 'Special Plan for development of Railways, Airways, Surface Road and Inland Waterways connectivity for speedy economic development of North East Region'. Lauding the initiative of the Speaker of the Manipur legislative assembly for organising the NERCPAC-2017 within two months of the constitution of the new assembly in the State, the governor emphasized that democracy was the only way to solve problems that continue to plague the region.Stressing that education and job creation are two big challenges of the region, she underlined the need of setting up of more higher educational institutions.
