IMPHAL: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said his government has appointed subdivisional officers (SDOs) as nodal officers of GST for giving raising awareness on the new tax regime.On the other hand, State Platform of Disabled Peoples' Organization, Manipur, (SPDPOM) has appealed to the state government to exempt taxes on all items used by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). He added that though the centre had revived the 90:10 central-state share for the northeast, all development projects depend on the financial condition of the states. "The PWDs don't have a proper source of income. To ensure effective implementation of the new tax regime, all government departments need to work for better co-ordination and understanding, he added.Earlier, around 17 different taxes were imposed on goods and services at the Centre and state levels, Biren said.

Addressing a meeting on GST at the conference hall of the old secretariat here, the chief minister directed all concerned to have a thorough knowledge about the new tax regime.Directing the deputy commissioners and SDOs to take the obligation of revenue collection in a serious manner, Biren said the meeting was held to discuss the GST's pros and cons and also find ways to enforce it effectively in the state. To ensure effective implementation of the new tax regime, all government departments need to work for better co-ordination and understanding, he added.Earlier, around 17 different taxes were imposed on goods and services at the Centre and state levels, Biren said. He added that though the centre had revived the 90:10 central-state share for the northeast, all development projects depend on the financial condition of the states. Hence, the government needs to strengthen and revitalize the tax/revenue collection system to expedite development, he said.Biren said his government would give thrust to skill development, connectivity, infrastructure, drinking water and other basic amenities.Expressing concern over the new tax regime, SPDPOM leaders said PWDs cannot accept GST on items particularly used by them. "The PWDs don't have a proper source of income. The implementation of GST has compounded their sufferings and isolated them from society further," they added.
