Manipur acts after Bihar CM Nitish's call, students' exodus stops

IMPHAL: Chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said his government has initiated all possible security measures at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Imphal that saw the exodus of about 120 students from Bihar and other states following a clash with locals on Sunday.Police brought back the students from Sekmai, about 15 km from here, while they were on their way to Dimapur (Nagaland) to proceed further towards their native states. A police officer said the students agreed to return to the campus following 'a mutual understanding'.Trouble first broke out at the Centre-run institute after an altercation between students and locals during a football match on Sunday. The situation turned serious on Monday when police had to step in to restore order on the campus. On Tuesday, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar called up Singh and requested him to take measures to ensure the safety and security of the students.On Wednesday, Singh visited the NIT campus to inspect its hostels, labs and classrooms. He also spoke to NIT authorities and students. He instructed the NIT to attend to the students' problems and immediately inform the government about any difficulty they face in future.Singh said he has asked CRPF officials to depute their personnel on the campus. He exhorted the students to stay calm and feel at home saying that the state government would ensure a peaceful academic atmosphere on the campus. He also shared his personal mobile phone numbers with the students and asked them to inform him directly if they face any problem.The CM said he has apprised the Union human resources development ministry and the states where the students belong to of the security measures his government has taken. He added that Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar responded positively to his request that the Centre send an inspection team to the NIT.
