CM Biren invites Manipur rebel groups for talks to end cycle of violence

"In the last four days, rebels fighting to restore Manipur's independence have attacked Assam Rifles forces twice at different places in Chandel, killing three jawans. In a fierce gun fight between heavily armed insurgents and 4 Battalion Assam Rifles near Sajik Tampak in the same district on Wednesday, one jawan and an insurgent were killed and another AR personnel was injured. An Assam Rifles bomb disposal team retrieved the bomb and safely detonated it at a nearby area, they added.The state government has already set up a seven-member committee headed by a top police officer to study the spate of subversive activities in the border town of Moreh and surrounding areas in the newly created district of Tengnoupal. IMPHAL: In view of the rise in subversive activities by rebels in Chandel district and other parts of the state, chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said his government plans to hold more dialogues with underground groups.Visiting the bereaved families of the three policemen who died in a road mishap in Tamenglong district on Wednesday night, Biren said, "Violence will not bring any solution and it hampers bringing peace and prosperity to the state. The troops found an AK rifle and three unexploded IEDs on the slain cadre.Security forces are keeping a sharp vigil on the southern frontier of the state along the porous India-Myanmar boundary to check insurgents.Suspected rebels planted an IED at Khongjom area of the newly set up Kakching district in the wee hours of Thursday, police sources said.

In the past few months, the state has witnessed a string of explosions and shootings by suspected rebels.Saying political dialogue is necessary to resolve any issue, Biren, who also holds the home portfolio, added that his government is waiting for the Centre's approval before initiating talks with the several underground outfits of the state.On Monday, two personnel of 18 Battalion Assam Rifles were killed and six were injured when rebels triggered a powerful IED explosion at Naga-dominated Chandel district headquarters.
