Debt-ridden Mandsaur farmer hangs self

INDORE: The spate of farmers’ suicide continued in Madhya Pradesh with another farmer committing suicide in Kachariya Kadmala village of Narayangarh area in Mandsaur district on Wednesday. Senior police officials reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem and started recording statements of his family members. He hanged himself from a date tree at a dried up well, police said.The body was found by a villager, who then informed police about the matter. They were crossed probably since he had paid the dues.

The 50-year-old farmer was under debt and was unable to repay his loan, said Narayangarh police.The farmer was identified as Bhanwarlal, son of Roopalal. He hanged himself from a date tree at a dried up well, police said.The body was found by a villager, who then informed police about the matter. Senior police officials reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem and started recording statements of his family members. His family members told police that he was under stress since he was unable to repay a loan.They said that the farmer must have first parked his vehicle in the field and then went towards the well to take the extreme step.“We have not found any suicide note from his possession but two promissory notes of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 30,000 were recovered from his pocket. They were crossed probably since he had paid the dues. We are investigating the matter but prima facie it appears that he ended his life due to mounting debts,” said BL Bamniya, investigating officer at Narayangarh police station.The family members said that even after selling his one bigha land, Bhanwarlal was unable to pay the debts.“He had Rs 3 lakh debts, which he owed to the bank and some private money lenders. Even after selling his land, he was unable to pay them and had been depressed for a long time,” said Nathulal, brother of the deceased while speaking to media persons.The family members were in a state of shock after the incident and a pall of gloom descended on villagers, who reached in large numbers to the well, where they kept sitting till the police investigation was over.
