INDORE: In absence of a high school in their locality, children carrying schoolbag from Hirli village in Dewas district of MP are forced to do a petrifying journey to make to get to school in Simrol village of Indore district. The perils are evident when risking their lives the kids take a boat made of plastic drums and cross Kshipra river to reach the school. The makeshift boat is pulled using a rope tied on its either side.It could have easily avoided had the authorities not delayed the construction of a submersible bridge on the river. The construction work was started three years ago.Hirli village has a primary school till Class V and for the further study the students have to go to Simrol, which has government-run school till Class X. There is another route to the school. But, it is a kutcha road and kids need to travel a distance of five kilometres on it to reach the school. To avoid taking the long-route, kids cross the river by the temporary boat. The villagers, too, use the boat to reach their farmlands.“During the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2016, the bridge was constructed over the river, but when water from Narmada river was released into Kshipra, both sides of the bridge washed away. The state government has sanctioned Rs 4.28 crore for completing the construction of bridge and the work is expected to start after monsoon,” Sanwer janpad CEO Nishibala Singh told TOI.Though there is no official figure about the children going to Simrol’s school from Hirli by crossing the river, the locals said that over 50 children from Hirli village are enrolled from Class VI to X in Simrol. After learning about the incident, Indore zila panchayat CEO Neha Meena said, “There is a road to Simrol, but, the villagers avoid it by taking a shortcut. We will persuade them not to risk their lives. But if they continue to do so we will have to send teachers from Simrol school to Hirli till monsoon gets over.”Dewas district collector Shrikant Pandey said, “I have called a meeting with the construction agency and the school’s teachers on Thursday further to understand the issue and find a way possible to address the same.”
