Penalty for non-segregation of waste IMC mandates residents to segregate waste or pay Rs1K fine

In serious cases of bulk dump of waste, people are likely to be penalized with Rs50,000 to Rs1 lakh. “Failure to segregate dry and wet waste will attract a maximum fine of Rs1000 for residents and Rs5000 for commercial establishments or outlets,” states the notification.IMC commissioner Ahseesh Singh said that this order has been issued for effective solid waste management. Indore: People, who will fail to segregate dry and wet waste , will now be spot fined by Indore Municipal Corporation ( IMC ).The civic body will charge Rs 1000 as fine from domestic users and Rs 5000 from commercial users for violation.The move is aimed at helping IMC in effective solid waste management. It comes after civic body officials found that despite requests, residents in some of the localities were not ready to cooperate in cent percent segregation of waste at their homes or outlets.Civic body have authorised all sanitation inspectors, zone officers and chief sanitation inspectors (CSI) to levy and collect spot fines from citizens for this violation.A notification has also been issued in this regard which states that officials are vested with this responsibility to levy fine under the amended Madhya Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act 1956. “Though we have achieved cent percent segregation, there was no order which can authorize civic body officials to levy penalty on those failing to segregate waste,” he said.The major difficulty was with the lower staff as they were not able to levy penalty for such violation since there was no offence related with littering, he added.In addition to this, a fine of Rs2000 will be levied on those dumping waste in water bodies, nullahs, drain lines, storm water lines and chambers.Bulk deposit of waste on both private and public space will attract a fine of Rs50,000.
