After her performance four decades ago, the sports teacher of a local school, got official recognition for national record for defending in kho-kho , a couple of days ago.The story dates back to the year 1978 when 17-year-old Kabra had established a defending record of seven minutes not out in six turns during the four matches in the 17th national kho-kho Championship. Remembering the championship that was conducted in Dhule, Maharashtra, Kabra who is elated to get the official certificate now, could feel the same happiness that was during the championship.“It wasn’t a surprise for me. I had even got the Jhansi Rani award which is given to the best player for my performance in the same tournament. I always knew that nobody has broken this record, however, the federation had not officially stated it till two days ago,” said sports officer who has been working with Shri Cloth Market Girls Commerce College (SCMGCC) for nearly three decades now.Pointing towards the reason she had not got the official recognition till now, she said, until some years ago one lap was to be of seven minutes, sometime back, it changed to nine minutes, therefore the Kho-Kho Federation of India declared it a national record two days ago.The mother of two has 20 national medals in her belt, of which, 12 are gold and eight are silver. Talking about Kho-Kho she said, it is an indigenous sport and it helps in overall development of body. Therefore, people should opt for it. “It is sad that not many people play this sport nowadays. The government should also encourage the sport,” said Kabra who still plays table tennis, basketball, softball and other recreational sports along with her students.
