Indore: After Hoshangabad and Satna, district jail in Indore on Sunday became a place, where prisoners are not confined to four walls and allowed to live with their families and move out during day to earn their livelihood.An open jail facility started at the district jail for seven inmates. The initiative aims at bringing jail inmates to the mainstream and empowers them to stand on their own before their release.“Seven convicts are being shifted to open jail facility to stay with their families. They have been chosen on the basis of their good conduct,” district jail superintendent Aditi Chaturvedi told media during the inauguration of the open jail facility on the district jail premises.District jail officials said that an open jail comprises of 1BHK cottage , where inmates who were convicted with life imprisonment and left with up to two years of jail term, are allowed to live with their families. The convicts have been allowed to work outside and earn on their own. Their kin or spouse is also allowed to go and earn, if they wish to.Jail authorities will also assist them in finding suitable employment opportunity to support their families. They are also in talks with civic body officials to check if they have any suitable jobs for these inmates. The convicts will also be provided with complete food ration for at least a month before they start earning.Chaturvedi said that the inmates of open jail will be allowed to go out for work between 6.00am and 6.30pm. “It is one of the government’s initiatives to help convicts before they settle down with their families and start a normal life away from the world of crime,” she said.The first open jail was introduced in Hoshangabad in the year 2010 and the second was started in Satna jail in June this year.
