Narmada water drinkable and good for aquatic life reveal tests by Pollution Control Board

Dr DK Wagela, chief chemist and lab head at regional PCB, said, “The water quality of Narmada is very good and suitable for aquatic life. INDORE: The water of Narmada is drinkable and good for aquatic life , revealed examination of samples taken recently by regional Pollution Control Board (PCB).As per report of the laboratory examination by regional PCB, Narmada water has fallen under top A grade, which makes it suitable for drinking without conventional treatment but after disinfection.The board had taken water samples from 17 different locations on Narmada as part of pre, during and post monitoring of water bodies ahead of idol immersion taking place during Ganeshotsav. The water was clear and less muddy.” Wagela said the water quality has improved due to better condition of nullahs and prevention of dirty water from getting mixed into river.According to the board, sewage treatment plants have also helped in improving quality of water.The board also collected samples from 10 tributaries of Narmada. Water samples are regularly being taken from different spots as part of the guidelines issued by Central PCB to monitor water quality before, during and post idol immersion.The administration has restricted immersion of idols in lakes, rivers and ponds to prevent pollution.According to the guidelines, the board is monitoring the levels of pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, conductivity, turbidity, chromium, lead, zinc and copper.
