10 cities take up Indore model to eradicate TB

What Indore does today — the ongoing TB Free City Campaign — has prompted 10 cities across India to follow its footsteps and implement the model to eradicate the disease.At least 126 fresh TB patients have been spotted in city during the ongoing campaign. Indore: In realizing the vision of a TB-free India by 2025, Indore has set a ‘model’ example for rest of the country to emulate. Around 126 were found TB positive.The campaign was started by Collaboration to Eliminate TB from India (CETI) in city. In this, we are providing training to local NGOs and other social groups under district TB officer’s surveillance. Around 6108 people were suspected to be suffering from TB.

What Indore does today — the ongoing TB Free City Campaign — has prompted 10 cities across India to follow its footsteps and implement the model to eradicate the disease.At least 126 fresh TB patients have been spotted in city during the ongoing campaign. Now, the local health department, eyeing global recognition, plans to present the model that yielded exemplary results before United Nations next week.The campaign started around two years ago and till now has been conducted in Khajrana, Malwa Mill, Banganga, Azad Nagar, Musakhedi and Kalani Nagar.Around 109384 households have been covered from which around 551113 people have been screened. Around 6108 people were suspected to be suffering from TB. Around 126 were found TB positive.The campaign was started by Collaboration to Eliminate TB from India (CETI) in city. Recently in a meeting organized in Delhi, ministry of health and family welfare decided to use the Indore model in Bhopal, Malad, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Mysore, Nagpur, Varanasi, Lucknow and 30 Sevak villages in Gujarat.Dr Salil Bhargava, co-founder of CETI, said, “We started the campaign to make Indore TB-free around two years ago, which works on active cases model. In this, we are providing training to local NGOs and other social groups under district TB officer’s surveillance. The groups visit local areas and check. The suspected patients are asked to go for tests done at subsidized prices and then patients, who are found positive, are provided with prescription and their medication starts.”He said, “Till now, 12 areas of city have been identified as high risk TB zone including Khajrana, Malwa Mill, Chandan Nagar, Musakhedi, Azad Nagar, Malganj, Juna Risala, Vrindavan Colony, Pardeshipura, Gauri Nagar, Scheme 78, Bhawarkuan, Juni Indore, Rajendra Nagar DMC and Scheme 51.”Talking to TOI, expert of infectious disease Dr Manoj Jain associated with CETI said, “We have three steps on which we work — find people, make strategic plan and train them to implement the plan.”He added, “Joint secretary of ministry of health and family welfare Vikas Sheel has accepted to implement the Indore model in 10 other cities of the country and have said that if the model works well there, it will be implemented in 15 more cities by January 4, 2019.”“During the meeting with United Nations, we are going to share Indore’s TB-Free Campaign Model as it is proving to be a successful campaign in city,” he said.A team member said, “Khajrana would likely be the first area of the city to be declared TB-free in next six months.”GFXAreas covered for Active case findingKhajranaMalwa MillBangangaAzad nagarMusakhediKalani NagarTotal households covered - 109384Total population screened - 551113Total TB suspected cases - 6108Total positive cases found - 126
